It’s second versus third at the Emirates on Sunday as Arsenal host Newcastle United in the late Premier League kick-off.
The Gunners will secure their place in the top five of the Premier League should they win, but they are winless in three going into this game.
Newcastle, meanwhile, have won four of their last six, including a vital victory over Chelsea last time out. They will leapfrog the Gunners should they win and will almost certainly secure their place in the top five in the process.
ARSENAL VS NEWCASTLE UNITED PREVIEW
The two sides have played each other three times this season already and Newcastle have won them all.
In the league, the Magpies won 1-0 at St James’ Park in November through an Alexander Isak 12th minute goal.
Arsenal and Newcastle also met in the semi-finals of the League Cup. Newcastle won both legs 2-0 to secure a 4-0 aggregate win. They went on to lift the trophy by beating Liverpool in the final.
The Gunners won last season’s corresponding fixture 4-1. A Sven Botman own goal and a Kai Havertz strike gave the Gunners a two-goal lead at half-time. Strikes from Bukayo Saka and Jakub Kiwior in the second half sealed the win. Joe Willock got a consolation goal for Newcastle.
Gabriel Jesus, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Gabriel Magalhaes and Mikel Merino are all out for Arsenal. The first three are injured while the latter is suspended.
There are fitness concerns over Declan Rice, Jurrien Timber, Leandro Trossard, Kai Havertz and Jorginho. Some or all may play, but Trossard, Rice and Havertz are the most likely. They were seen in training earlier this week.
Lewis Hall and Matt Targett will both not feature for Newcastle. Joe Willock, Kieran Trippier and Joelinton are all likely to be injured. The latter will be a huge blow to the Magpies’ midfield prowess.
Sven Botman sustained a knee injury in Newcastle’s win over Chelsea but boss Eddie Howe has suggested it’s not too serious. He could line up against the Gunners on Sunday.
ARSENAL VS NEWCASTLE UNITED – PREDICTIONS
Arsenal Win
The Gunners won last season’s corresponding fixture comfortably and know a win here will secure a spot in next season’s Champions League.
Draw
Just two points separate the two sides in second and third, so the sides are evenly matched. Arsenal’s better overall record (as well as home advantage) and Newcastle’s strong form may cancel each other out.
Newcastle Win
The Magpies have won all three encounters against Arsenal this season and are looking for their first league double against them since the 1994-95 campaign.

Newcastle Win
Newcastle’s win over Chelsea last time out significantly boosted their top-five ambitions. They will want to ride the wave and practically secure Champions League football with a win over Arsenal. The Gunners are faltering, having not won any of their last four home games in all competitions. They did come from two goals down to draw 2-2 against Liverpool last time out though. Despite this confidence boost, I expect Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali to dominate the midfield. This should give the Magpies a narrow win.
Both Teams to Score – Yes
Both Teams to Score has only landed in one of the last 16 encounters between the two sides and none of the three games this season. However, the only time it has landed was in this fixture last season, which Arsenal won 4-1. Newcastle do keep clean sheets, but almost exclusively against teams towards the bottom of the table. Conversely, Arsenal have scored in all of their last three games in all competitions. They have only failed to score in one game since a goalless draw against Nottingham Forest in late February.
