Chelsea will look to consolidate their place in the top five of the Premier League on Friday when they face Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues lost 2-0 to Newcastle United last time out, allowing sixth-placed Aston Villa to draw level on points. They will be looking to get back on track against a United side that is having an abysmal Premier League campaign.
The Europa League finalists have definitely saved their best performances for that competition. Last time out, they lost 2-0 at home to West Ham, highlighting their poor domestic form.
CHELSEA VS MAN UTD PREVIEW
United go into this game in 16th position in the Premier League, having lost four of their last five games. They have nothing to play for except pride, but will likely have one eye on the Europa League Final next week.
The two sides played out a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford earlier in the season. A Bruno Fernandes penalty opened the scoring for the home side but the Blues equalised through Moisés Caicedo four minutes later.
Chelsea won last season’s corresponding fixture 4-3. A Cole Palmer hat-trick did the damage, with the winners coming in the 10th and 11th minute of stoppage time. Conor Gallagher had opened the scoring for Chelsea in the fourth minute, with a brace for Alejandro Garnacho and a Bruno Fernandes strike getting United on the score sheet.
The defeat to Newcastle was Chelsea’s first in the league since mid-March and broke a five-game winning run in all competitions. There are caveats to their defeat too – a controversial red card and a busy run of fixtures may have contributed.
Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson is suspended for the rest of the season following his red card against Newcastle.
Christopher Nkunku (knock) and Marc Guiu (hamstring) are also both out, as are Wesley Fofana (muscle) and Omari Kellyman (hamstring).
Jadon Sancho can’t face his parent club.
Manchester United have a depleted squad too, with Diogo Dalot (calf), Lisandro Martinez (knee) and Joshua Zirkzee (hamstring) all out.
Centre-back Leny Yoro may also be missing having picked up a foot injury against the Hammers.
CHELSEA VS MAN UTD – PREDICTIONS
Chelsea Win
League position, current form and home advantage all point to a Chelsea win. They will be confident of cementing their top-five credentials against a poor United side.
Draw
Three of the last four games between the two sides have ended a draw, as did the reverse fixture at Old Trafford earlier this season. This fixture has ended in a stalemate on 27 occasions, more than any other in Premier League history.
Man Utd Win
Despite their poor league form, United’s performances in the Europa League demonstrate they can beat anyone on their day.

Chelsea Win
It’s really hard to look beyond Chelsea. They have only lost twice at Stamford Bridge in the league this season and not at all this calendar year. Their defeat to Newcastle last time out broke a five-match winning run. United have been playing dreadfully, while they are likely to rest key players ahead of next week’s Europa League Final. All of this points to a straightforward victory for the Blues.
Cole Palmer to Score
The English attacking midfielder scored a hat-trick in this fixture last season and has netted four times in three Premier League games against Manchester United. He has scored 15 league goals for Chelsea this season, making him the eighth-highest scorer in the English top flight. United have conceded 11 goals in their last four away games so he will relish adding to his record.
