Chelsea host Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge on Thursday, with both sides at opposite ends of the table.
The Blues sit in fourth place going into this set of midweek fixtures and will be looking to consolidate their position in the Champions League places. Spurs, meanwhile, have little to play for. They are in 14th spot, 17 points off the relegation places but with little chance of qualifying for Europe either.
Despite being 10 places below Chelsea, Tottenham have scored two more goals than them this season (55 versus 53). Their defence has been more leaky though (43 versus 37). This suggests the two teams are more evenly matched than their league positions suggest.
CHELSEA VS TOTTENHAM PREVIEW
Chelsea go into this game off the back of a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal. This broke a four-match winning run that included beating København over two legs in the Champions League. However, the longer view is grimmer as Chelsea have only won four of their last 13 Premier League games. Three of these wins were against teams flirting with relegation.
Tottenham, meanwhile, had a very mixed March. They progressed to the next stage of the Europa League by beating AZ over two legs, but drew 2-2 at home to Bournemouth and lost 2-0 at Fulham last time out. They won three Premier League matches in a row in February and will hope April will see a return to this sort of form.
Chelsea have the upper hand in recent matches, winning the last three against Tottenham. The reverse fixture earlier this season was a seven-goal thriller as Chelsea ran out 3-4 winners at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The game can be remembered for Cole Palmer’s ‘Panenka’ penalty, which helped Chelsea overturn a 2-0 deficit to win the game.
Chelsea are very much Tottenham’s bogey team as Spurs have only won once in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge. Last season’s corresponding fixture saw Chelsea win 2-0, with goals from Trevoh Chalobah and Nicolas Jackson proving to be the difference.
Noni Madueke and Nicolas Jackson may feature for Chelsea on Thursday, the international break coming at just the right time to help them recover from their injuries. Cole Palmer and Marc Guiu may also be back.
For Tottenham, Dejan Kulusevski, Kevin Danso and Richarlison will all be assessed ahead of the game. Radu Dragusin is definitely still out.
CHELSEA VS TOTTENHAM PREDICTIONS
Chelsea Win
Chelsea have not lost at home since Boxing Day and are on a five-match winning run at Stamford Bridge in all competitions. Recent results in this fixture are also on their side.
Draw
There was only one goal in it at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, so despite their differing fortunes, Spurs could push Chelsea close. Their similar goal scoring and defensive records suggest the same.
Tottenham Win
Spurs are always dangerous in attack and have scored more goals in the Premier League than Chelsea this season. They will want revenge after throwing away a two-goal lead in their 3-4 defeat back in December.
CHELSEA VS TOTTENHAM – BETTING TIPS
Chelsea Win
Form, home advantage and the need for points all tip this fixture in Chelsea’s favour. They are looking for their fourth straight victory over Spurs and are hoping to stretch their unbeaten home run against them to nine games.
Under 2.5 Goals
This market is very much a toss-up. Three of the last six Premier League matches between the two sides have had Under 2.5 goals. Indeed, all three have had a 2-0 score line.
The other three matches saw four, five and seven goals respectively. However, only one of these was at Stamford Bridge (a 2-2 draw), with Chelsea winning the other two 2-0. With Under 2.5 goals having far more attractive odds, this is my pick here.
