Liverpool host Everton in a Merseyside Derby on Wednesday evening, with the two sides needing points for differing reasons.
The Reds will be looking to secure the league title as soon as possible. Going into this set of midweek fixtures, they were 12 points clear of second-placed Arsenal. The Gunners play Fulham on Tuesday evening, so by the time of this game, that lead could have been cut to nine points.
Everton, meanwhile, are languishing in 15th place with very little to play for. Seventeen points off the drop zone but 14 points from the European places, their motivation will come from beating their local rivals and thwarting their attempt at winning the title.
LIVERPOOL VS EVERTON PREVIEW
Liverpool go into this game smarting from their defeat to Newcastle United in the League Cup Final. The Reds were favourites going into the game, but were completely outplayed by the Magpies. Goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak gave Newcastle a 2-0 lead, with a late goal from Federico Chiesa proving to be insufficient.
It was a torrid week for Liverpool, who had been knocked out of the Champions League by PSG five days earlier. This means the Premier League is the only silverware Arne Slot’s men can win, so their resolve against Everton will be even stronger.
Everton go into this fixture off the back of four draws, the last three with the same 1-1 score line. They are unbeaten in nine league games under David Moyes, winning four and drawing five. However, they now face a very difficult month with games against the current top five throughout April. They will therefore be hoping to take advantage of the Reds’ current malaise by pouring salt into the wound.
The two sides played out a 2-2 draw at Goodison Park back in February, while the corresponding fixture last season was won by Liverpool 2-0. Indeed, Liverpool have won their last three home games against Everton by the same 2-0 score line.
Alisson and Ryan Gravenberch should both return for Liverpool, having recovered from injuries.
Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez and Conor Bradley are all still missing though, so Jarell Quansah will likely retain his position at right-back. Alexander-Arnold should be back later in April.
Vitalii Mykolenko will need to be assessed ahead of the game, with the Everton man having been taken off with a thigh issue in the second half of Ukraine’s 3-0 defeat to Belgium on Sunday.
LIVERPOOL VS EVERTON PREDICTIONS
Liverpool Win
Liverpool have won the last three encounters at Anfield between the two sides. They have more to play for, while the support of the home crowd will undoubtedly spur them on.
Draw
The two sides drew the reverse fixture back in February 2-2, while Everton are the draw kings in the Premier League right now. They have drawn their last three games 1-1.
Everton Win
Liverpool may still be smarting from being dumped out of the Champions League and losing the League Cup Final. Everton’s motivation will be high as they aim to hinder the title challenge of their bitter rivals. Meanwhile, Everton can win on the road, having beaten Crystal Palace 1-2 back in the middle of February.
LIVERPOOL VS EVERTON – BETTING TIPS
Liverpool Win
Ultimately, with home advantage and more to play for, I expect Liverpool to be too strong. They have won 21 of their 29 games in the league this season, losing just once. They have scored more than double the number of goals than their rivals (69 to 32) too.
Mo Salah to Score Anytime
The Premier League’s top scorer with 27 goals to his name, Salah has scored in the last two games against Everton at Anfield. He also scored in the 2-2 draw at Goodison Park last month. He has only scored five fewer Premier League goals than the entire Everton team this season.
