Aston Villa travel to Old Trafford to face a Manchester United side smarting after their defeat in the Europa League Final to Tottenham on Wednesday.
A Brennan Johnson first-half strike was enough to sink United, snuffing out their last chance of claiming anything this season. Languishing in 16th place in the Premier League, the Old Trafford outfit now only have pride to play for.
Conversely, the visitors need a result to boost their top-five credentials. Villa are currently in sixth, but level on points with fourth-placed Newcastle United and fifth-placed Chelsea. Their goal difference is far inferior though, so they will need to get a better result than at least one of these sides on the final day of the season. They could finish in the top five if they, Newcastle and Chelsea all win but third-placed Manchester City lose.
Ultimately though, they will be going for the win to give themselves the best chance of securing a spot in next season’s Champions League.
MAN UTD VS ASTON VILLA PREVIEW
The two sides played out a goalless draw at Villa Park earlier this season while last season’s corresponding fixture saw United win 3-2. John McGinn and Leander Dendoncker had fired Villa into a 2-0 half-time lead, but an Alejandro Garnacho brace clawed the game back for United. Rasmus Højlund struck the winner eight minutes from time.
Villa are enjoying some decent form, having won five of their last six Premier League games. This is in contrast to United, who have lost five of their last six. United are winless in the league in eight games. In addition, the Old Trafford side are coming off the back of their demoralising defeat to Spurs in the final of the Europa League on Wednesday.
Interestingly, Villa come into this game off the back of beating Tottenham in the Premier League last weekend. Ezri Konsa and Boubacar Kamara provided the goals as Villa ran out comfortable 2-0 winners.
MAN UTD VS ASTON VILLA – PREDICTIONS
Man Utd Win
It has been an abysmal season for United, but they will want to end on a high and give their fans something to cheer.
Draw
The two sides shared a goalless draw when they played each other back in October. The last time United played at home against a top-five chasing side, they drew 0-0 against Manchester City in April.
Aston Villa Win
Villa beat Spurs last weekend, the same side that United lost to in midweek. They are also a team in form, having won their last three Premier League games without conceding a goal.

Aston Villa Win
Villa need the points more and are in far better form than United, who will be feeling beleaguered following their midweek defeat. The visitors will also be fresher, having not played since last Friday (16 May). Villa have won their last three games, keeping clean sheets in all of them, while United’s last home game saw them comfortably defeated by 15th-placed West Ham.
Under 2.5 Goals
Manchester United’s last three games in all competitions, as well as Villa’s last three games, have all delivered Under 2.5 goals. This season’s reverse fixture between the two sides at Villa Park ended goalless too. Manchester United have only scored 42 Premier League goals this season, an average of 1.14 a game. All of this points to a low-scoring affair.
