Newcastle United host Everton on the final day of the Premier League season, looking to get the points they need to finish in the top five.
The fourth-placed Magpies are one of three sides sitting on 66 points. They have a better goal difference than both Chelsea and Aston Villa, with the latter currently in sixth-place and thus out of the Champions League places.
Unlike these sides though, Newcastle go into this game off the back of a defeat. A Declan Rice strike saw them lose 1-0 to Arsenal last time out and they will want to get back on track here.
Eddie Howe’s side therefore know they cannot slip up against an Everton outfit with little to play for. They will finish 13th in the league whatever happens on the final day of the season. With three wins in their last six, the Toffees do present a formidable challenge. In fact, they have the exact same recent record as the Magpies.
NEWCASTLE UNITED VS EVERTON PREVIEW
The last two games between the two sides have both ended in draws. Earlier this season, the teams drew 0-0 at Goodison Park. Meanwhile, last season’s corresponding fixture at St James’ Park ended 1-1. Alexander Isak gave the Magpies the lead in the 15th minute, but a late penalty from Dominic Calvert-Lewin gave the Toffees a share of the spoils.
Despite this, Newcastle have the much stronger recent record in this fixture. Everton have only won two of the last 10 games between the two sides and one of the last five. Everton last won at St James’ Park back in December 2019, with a Dominic Calvert-Lewin brace leading them to a 2-1 victory.
Newcastle may be without top scorer Alexander Isak due to a groin issue, while midfielder Joelinton is out with a knee injury. Full backs Kieran Trippier (thigh) and Lewis Hall (foot) will also not feature. Matt Targett hasn’t recovered from his hamstring problem.
Jarrad Branthwaite is a doubt for Everton due to a thigh problem. Seamus Coleman (thigh), James Tarkowski (thigh), Jesper Lindstrom (groin) and Orel Mangala (knee) will not play.

Newcastle United Win
The Magpies have the greater need for points and the passionate St James’ crowd will be right behind them. They have won their last six home games and should have enough to defeat an Everton side with nothing to play for, even if Alexander Isak doesn’t feature.
Iliman Ndiaye to Score
The Everton midfielder is in a fine run of form, having scored six goals in his last 10 starts in the Premier League. He has flourished under David Moyes with a goal on average every 141 minutes. He scored both goals against Southampton last time out. If anyone is going to grab a goal at St James’ Park, it will be him.
