Odds Converter Betting Tool
Before you start betting on sports, you need to understand how odds work. The odds are related to implied probability, so knowing how to read them is crucial to understanding the best value bets. You will usually see odds written in one of three ways – American, decimal, and fractional. We’ll take a look at all of these below, highlighting each with some examples. We’ll also show you how to convert between all three with our odds converter tool.

Fractional Odds
Fractional odds are most common in the UK and Ireland and are typically shown in GBP. These odds express how much you can win relative to your stake. For example, odds of 3/1 mean you win £3 for every £1 wagered.
The fraction represents profit only, so your original stake is added to the returned amount. Fractional odds remain popular due to tradition and their ease in expressing clear profit-to-stake ratios.
Converting Between Odds
Being able to convert between odds can be useful, although most websites have a dropdown option where you can select your odds of preference. Meanwhile, many websites have odds calculators that show American, decimal, and fractional odds simultaneously. The implied probability is also often stated.
Fractional > Decimal
Divide the first number (numerator) by the second number (denominator) and add 1.
For example:
1/2 = 0.5 + 1 = 1.5
2/1 = 2.0 + 1 = 3.0
5/2 = 2.5 + 1 = 3.5 etc
Decimal > Fractional
Subtract 1 from the decimal then find the equivalent fraction.
For example:
1.5 – 1 = 0.5 = 1/2
3.0 – 1 = 2.0 = 2/1
3.5 – 1 = 2.5 = 5/2 etc
American > Decimal
If the American odds are positive: (American odds/100) + 1 = decimal odds.
For example: New York Jets +550
(550/100) + 1 = (5.5) + 1 = 6.5
If the American odds are negative: (100/American odds) + 1 = decimal odds.
For example: New England Patriots -900
e.g. (100/900) + 1 = (0.11) + 1 = 1.11
Decimal > American
For odds of 2.00 or more: (decimal odds – 1) * 100 = American odds.
For example: Newcastle United 3.25
3.25 – 1 = 2.25 * 100 = +225
For odds between 1.01-1.99: -100 / (decimal odds – 1) = American odds.
For example: Arsenal 1.5
-100/(1.5 – 1) = -100/(0.5) = -200
American > Fractional
If the American odds are positive: American odds/100 = fractional odds.
For example: New York Jets +550
550/100 = 5.5/1 = 11/2
If the American odds are negative: -100/-American odds = fractional odds.
For example: New England Patriots -500
-100/-500 = 100/500 = 1/5
Fractional > American
For fractions > 1: (fractional value) * 100 = American odds.
For example: Milwaukee Bucks 7/1
7/1 * 100 = +700
For fractions < 1: -100/(fractional value) = American odds.
For example: Chelsea 11/20
-100/(11/20) = -100/(0.55) = -182

FAQS
How do betting odds work?
Betting odds show implied probability. The lower the odds, the more likely an outcome is. The higher the odds, the less likely an outcome is.
Which odds system is better?
No one odds system is better, it often depends on what you are used to. Americans may be more familiar with American odds, Brits with fractional, and Europeans with decimal. It is useful to understand all three though.
What does + and - mean in sports betting?
When it comes to American odds, a – sign denotes favourites and a + sign denotes outsiders.
