Event: Formula 1 AWS Hungarian Grand Prix 2026
Round: Round 11 of the 2026 Formula 1 season
Date: 26 July 2026
Race time: 15:00 CEST
Circuit: Hungaroring
Location: MogyorĂłd, near Budapest, Hungary
Circuit length: 4.381 km
Race distance: 70 laps — 306.63 km
Recommended market: Race winner
Main selection: Kimi Antonelli to win
Best odds: 7/4 — approximately 2.75
Confidence: Medium
The central question in this F1 Hungarian Grand Prix 2026 prediction is whether Kimi Antonelli can carry his dominant Mercedes form from Spa onto a very different type of circuit.
Antonelli arrives in Hungary after winning the Belgian Grand Prix from pole and extending his championship lead to 45 points. Mercedes has set the standard across much of the season, but the Hungaroring’s slow corners, short straights and high-downforce layout could bring Ferrari, McLaren and Max Verstappen closer to the favourite.
Hungarian Grand Prix 2026 schedule
The race weekend begins on Friday, with three practice sessions followed by qualifying and Sunday’s Grand Prix.
Friday, 24 July

- Hungarian Grand Prix: 15:00 CEST
The race will be contested over 70 laps of the 4.381-kilometre Hungaroring.
Why the Hungaroring is different
The Hungaroring is one of the most technical circuits on the Formula 1 calendar. Its limited number of long straights and continuous sequence of corners have led to frequent comparisons with a karting track.
Teams generally run high-downforce configurations similar to those used in Monaco. Mechanical grip, front-end confidence and the ability to connect several corners cleanly are usually more important than outright straight-line speed.
Overtaking can also be difficult. The main opportunity normally comes into Turn 1 after the start-finish straight, making qualifying and track position especially important. A driver trapped behind a slower car can lose valuable time even with superior race pace.
The circuit therefore rewards a complete weekend rather than raw Sunday speed. Drivers need a stable car in qualifying, disciplined tyre management and a strategy that protects them from the undercut.
Kimi Antonelli’s form and championship position
Antonelli enters Budapest as the championship leader with 204 points, 45 ahead of Lewis Hamilton and 50 ahead of Mercedes teammate George Russell.
The Italian has won six of the opening ten races, including five consecutive victories between China and Monaco. He returned to the top step in Belgium after a more difficult period, taking pole before defeating Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen.
His Spa performance was particularly convincing because he had to recover the lead on track after losing track position during the pit-stop phase. Antonelli passed Leclerc with ten laps remaining and controlled the closing stages to win by just under two seconds.
The concern is that Mercedes has not looked equally dominant at every circuit. Ferrari won in Barcelona and Great Britain, while George Russell won in Austria. That variation suggests Antonelli is the most likely individual winner without being an overwhelming selection.
Mercedes’ Hungarian Grand Prix prospects
Mercedes begins the weekend as the team to beat based on its overall 2026 results.
Antonelli has supplied six victories, while Russell won the season opener in Australia and added another victory in Austria. The car has demonstrated qualifying speed, efficient tyre use and strong race pace across several circuit types.
Hungary should suit a car that changes direction well and remains stable through medium-speed corners. However, the limited overtaking opportunities create extra pressure on Saturday. Mercedes cannot rely on a large race-pace advantage to recover if both cars qualify behind Ferrari or McLaren.
Russell is also an important contender despite his Belgian retirement. He sits third in the championship and was on the podium at the Hungaroring in 2025. His outright price is longer than Antonelli’s, but his season has included several strong qualifying and race performances.
Ferrari’s challenge
Ferrari arrives with considerable momentum.
Charles Leclerc won the British Grand Prix and followed that result with second place at Spa. He also claimed pole position at the 2025 Hungarian Grand Prix before falling to fourth in the race.
That history matters because it confirms Leclerc can produce an exceptional qualifying lap at this circuit. The Hungaroring rewards front-end confidence and precision, two areas in which Leclerc can be particularly strong when the Ferrari is balanced.
Lewis Hamilton should also be considered. He is second in the 2026 championship and has an outstanding historical record in Hungary. His weekend in Belgium was untidy, including a practice crash, contact with Russell and a time penalty, but he recovered to finish fourth.
Ferrari’s best chance may come in qualifying. Starting on the front row would allow either driver to control the pace and force Mercedes to attempt an undercut or alternative tyre strategy.
The market had both Leclerc and Hamilton at approximately 4/1 to win when checked, offering a larger potential return than Antonelli but with less consistency behind the selection.
Max Verstappen and Red Bull
Max Verstappen remains difficult to dismiss despite Red Bull’s inconsistent start to the new regulations.
He qualified second and finished third in Belgium, giving Red Bull its 300th Formula 1 podium. His performance showed that the team is becoming more competitive, particularly when Verstappen has confidence in the front of the car.
Hungary presents both an opportunity and a risk.
The circuit places less emphasis on engine power, which could reduce one of Red Bull’s potential weaknesses. However, the car must remain predictable through long sequences of corners. Any instability can cost time throughout an entire sector rather than at one isolated turn.
Verstappen was priced at approximately 6/1. That is an interesting outsider price for a driver of his quality, but the selection depends on Red Bull confirming its progress during Friday practice.
Can McLaren return to winning form?
McLaren produced a one-two finish at the 2025 Hungarian Grand Prix, with Lando Norris holding off Oscar Piastri by only 0.698 seconds.
The team therefore has recent evidence that its car concept can work extremely well at the Hungaroring. Norris used an alternative strategy to win that race, while Piastri applied heavy pressure during the closing laps.
Its 2026 form has been less convincing than Mercedes’ form, but both drivers remain possible podium candidates. Norris recovered to seventh in Belgium despite a grid penalty and a slow pit stop, while Piastri finished fifth after suffering damage during contact with Leclerc.
Norris was available at approximately 9/1 to win, with Piastri at around 16/1. Those prices reflect McLaren’s lower position in the current competitive order, but Hungary may offer the team a better opportunity than Spa.
Hungarian Grand Prix 2026 betting tips
Main tip: Kimi Antonelli to win
Selection: Kimi Antonelli to win
Odds: 7/4 — approximately 2.75
Confidence: Medium
Antonelli is the most logical race-winner selection. He leads the championship, has won six of ten races and arrives after converting pole into victory at Spa.
Mercedes has provided the most consistently competitive package of the season, while Antonelli has shown that he can manage pressure, tyre degradation and changing race situations.
The 7/4 price implies a probability of approximately 36%. That is not especially generous, but it remains reasonable before practice because no rival has matched Antonelli’s combination of qualifying speed and race consistency.
Alternative tip: Charles Leclerc to finish on the podium
Selection: Charles Leclerc podium finish
Confidence: Medium
Leclerc has produced consecutive top-two finishes and started the 2025 Hungarian Grand Prix from pole.
Ferrari’s recent form suggests another podium is realistic, especially if Leclerc qualifies on one of the first two rows. A podium market reduces the risk of backing him to defeat both Mercedes drivers, Hamilton, Verstappen and the McLarens outright.
The price should be checked after Friday practice. A strong long-run performance from Ferrari may cause the odds to shorten significantly.
Value tip: Max Verstappen to win
Selection: Max Verstappen to win
Indicative odds: 6/1 — approximately 7.00
Confidence: Low to Medium
Verstappen is the higher-risk value option.
Red Bull is not currently the strongest team, but third place at Spa represented another positive step. The 6/1 price provides more margin than the odds available for Antonelli, Leclerc or Hamilton.
This selection becomes more attractive only if Verstappen is close to the leading Mercedes and Ferrari cars during qualifying simulations. If Red Bull remains several tenths behind over one lap, overtaking difficulty will substantially reduce his chance of winning.
Qualifying tip: Charles Leclerc for pole position
Leclerc took pole at this circuit in 2025 and remains one of the strongest qualifiers on the grid.
This market should be considered only after third practice. The Hungaroring can evolve quickly over the weekend, and small differences in track temperature or tyre preparation can decide qualifying.
Antonelli remains the safer pole candidate based on his six 2026 pole positions, but Leclerc may offer the more interesting price.

Strategy and tyre considerations
Track position is normally central to the Hungarian Grand Prix.
A one-stop strategy may be possible if degradation remains controlled, but high track temperatures can increase tyre wear and create opportunities for a two-stop approach. Teams must also consider the time lost behind traffic after a pit stop.
The undercut can be powerful because fresh tyres offer a meaningful grip advantage. A leading driver may therefore need to stop earlier than planned to defend against a rival rather than waiting for the theoretically fastest strategy.
Safety Car timing is another major variable. The circuit’s narrow layout and limited overtaking zones can make a well-timed neutralisation extremely valuable.
Qualifying should remain the best guide to the race. Research covering almost two decades of Formula 1 results found qualifying performance to be a stronger indicator of final finishing position than practice results or grid position after penalties.
Risks to the predictions
The main risk to the Antonelli prediction is that the Hungaroring may reduce Mercedes’ advantage.
Ferrari has improved significantly and has won two of the last four races. Leclerc’s previous pole in Hungary also suggests Ferrari can compete at the front on this layout.
McLaren is another risk. Its 2025 one-two finish demonstrated excellent tyre management and strong performance through the circuit’s connected corners. If its 2026 updates work as intended, Norris and Piastri may be more competitive than their outright prices suggest.
Qualifying incidents, penalties and changing weather conditions could also transform the betting picture. Because overtaking is difficult, a driver starting outside the top four may need an unusually effective strategy or Safety Car period to win.
For that reason, stakes should remain moderate before the practice sessions provide a clearer view of the competitive order.
Prediction
My main F1 Hungarian Grand Prix 2026 prediction is Kimi Antonelli to win at approximately 7/4.
Antonelli has the strongest combination of current form, qualifying speed, championship consistency and machinery. His victory in Belgium showed that Mercedes remains the reference team and that the Italian can recover when strategy temporarily moves him out of the lead.
I expect Ferrari to remain close, with Leclerc the most likely driver to challenge Antonelli. Verstappen and the McLaren pair should also be monitored, but each carries more uncertainty.
Predicted podium
- Kimi Antonelli
- Charles Leclerc
- George Russell
Verdict
The F1 Hungarian Grand Prix 2026 betting prediction is Kimi Antonelli to win at 7/4 with Medium confidence.
Antonelli is the clear form selection after six victories in ten races and another dominant weekend in Belgium. However, the Hungaroring’s technical layout and limited overtaking opportunities increase the importance of qualifying and give Ferrari a realistic chance of challenging Mercedes.
The best alternative is Charles Leclerc to finish on the podium, while Max Verstappen at approximately 6/1 is the higher-risk value option.
Odds are indicative and were checked before the start of the race weekend. Prices may change significantly following practice and qualifying.victories reduce the appeal of the short price, but the Italian remains the most likely player to advance.
